The IRS provides a secure online tool that updates once every 24 hours. You can start checking 24 hours after e-filing or 4 weeks after mailing a paper return. You’ll need the following to track your federal refund:

  • Your Social Security Number (SSN) or ITIN
  • Your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.)
  • Your exact refund amount from your tax return

Track Your State Refund

  • Paper-filed returns: 4–8 weeks, sometimes longer
  • State refunds: Vary widely—typically 2–6 weeks

Note: Filing early, claiming certain credits, or submitting returns with errors may delay processing.
